Who is Jesus Christ?

The short answer to the question “Who is Jesus Christ?” is:

- Jesus Christ is God and Creator; and

- Jesus Christ is Redeemer and Saviour; and

- Jesus Christ is soon-coming Judge and Eternal King.

The detailed answer, is below:

Jesus Christ is God and Creator

The Holy Bible says, ‘In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. (John 1:1-2)’. Here Jesus Christ is referred to as ‘the Word’. So the Holy Bible says that the Lord Jesus Christ is God! The same passage further reads, ‘The Word (=Jesus Christ) became flesh (=Incarnation of Jesus Christ) and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only Son (=Unique and Beloved- a title given to the Lord Jesus Christ), who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)’. ‘No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only (=again the Lord Jesus Christ) Son, Who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father (or ‘who is at the Father's side’), has made Him known. (John 1:18).’ So the Bible is emphatic that the Lord Jesus Christ is God. Not “a god” but God!

The Holy Bible also declares, ‘Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:3)’. Another assertion: ‘For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16)’. So the Lord Jesus Christ is not only God, He is also the Creator. In fact, He is Creator-God!

Jesus Christ is Redeemer and Saviour

The core teaching of the Holy Bible is that Jesus Christ is Redeemer and Saviour. This is the purpose of the incarnation of Lord Jesus Christ as a human being. This truth is taught throughout the Holy Bible. The Bible says that man (=all of us humans, men & women, without exception) are sinful. We sin because we are sinful, not the other way around. Thus, in our sinfulness and finiteness, we are unable to approach a holy, infinite God. Hence, it was essential that the Infinite Himself take up the punishment due to us, in our stead. The Creator-God - Lord Jesus Christ did this. Thus, He became our Redeemer and our Saviour!

The Bible teaches that: ‘...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)’ and ‘...the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)’.

One of the most memorised verses of the Bible declares: ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son (=Unique & Beloved Son - i.e. the Lord Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. (John 3:16-17)’.

Again the Bible asserts, ‘For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all people... (1 Timothy 2:5-6)’.

Jesus Christ’s own declaration about himself is: ‘For the Son of Man (=a title the Lord Jesus Christ used for Himself, which is taken from the Old Testament book of Daniel (Daniel 7:13); also see Revelation 1:12-19) did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)’.

Again, the Holy Bible says: ‘Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)'.

Last but certainly not the least: ‘God made Him who had no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)’. ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creation. The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-20)’.

So Jesus Christ is Creator-God, who willing accepted the death penalty on our behalf, so that we – His creation – could obtain free pardon and hence eternal life, if we choose to have it.

Jesus Christ is the soon-coming Judge and King

The Holy Bible teaches that the final act of the Lord Jesus Christ – with reference to His creation – will be His personal return one day as Judge and King. This will be the end of time and of the universe – earth included – and the establishment of His Kingdom; an eternal kingdom of holiness & righteousness, which will be forever. Some verses from the Holy Bible that emphasises this assurance are:

‘After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)’.

‘For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; He entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. (Hebrews 9:24-28)’.

‘”Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am”. (John 14:1-3)’.

‘For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. According to the Lord’s Word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:14-18)’.

‘Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from His presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:11-15)’.

So the answer the question “Who is Jesus Christ?” would be:

The Lord Jesus Christ is Creator-God, who loved us – His creation – so much that He incarnated once as a human being and accepted the death sentence, in our stead; so that we – His creation – could obtain a free pardon and hence eternal life with the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is also coming soon as Judge and eternal King!
